Government Publish Results for Mass Events Tests

Data extracted from the NHS Test and Trace app has shown that mass events can be conducted safely, but caution is still required to be taken around certain aspects of participation in mass events. The data was collected from 37 trial events held over a 4-month period, which formed the Events Research Programme (ERP). The trial events included, EURO 2020 matches at Wembley, The British Grand Prix at Silverstone, The Wimbledon Championship and the Download and Tramlines music festivals. Over this period, the data showed that case numbers were largely in line with or below community infection rates.

Whilst the data shows that mass events can be conducted safely, the Government has urged that a cautious approach be taken at events where attendees are in close proximity for extended periods of time and at high-density pinch points are formed at venues. Caution should also be implemented by attendees when travelling to and from events and when attendees are mixing indoors before, during and after events.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has stated,

“We’ve shown that we can reintroduce mass sports and cultural events safely but it is important that people remain cautious when mixing in very crowded settings.”

Further details on the Government’s findings can be found on the Government's Press Release: 'Government data shows mass events can take place safely but fans urged to remain cautious in crowds and get vaccinated'.
